Embedding safety culture and risk management within Keringenteam 1

The Maeslant Barrier and Hartel Barrier are among the most important flood defences in the Netherlands. Within Flood Protection Team 1 of Rijkswaterstaat (West Netherlands South), safety is therefore not a choice, but a requirement. INNOCY supports the team with knowledge and advice in the field of integral safety – from strategy to implementation.

The Request

Rijkswaterstaat has a framework agreement with INNOCY for the delivery of safety products and services. Under this agreement, INNOCY was asked to collaborate with the Rijkswaterstaat project organization over a four-year period to help ensure a healthy and safe working environment during maintenance and operational activities on both the Maeslant Barrier and the Hartel Barrier.

The Solution

Maintenance on both barriers is carried out between April and September, when the risk of high water is minimal. On any given day, as many as ten different main or subcontractors may be working on-site. Each maintenance project carries its own specific safety risks, and in addition, many activities and associated risks overlap. INNOCY’s task is to maintain oversight and ensure the surrounding environment remains safe. We achieve this not only by conducting safety rounds, performing inspections, and advising the project team, but also by fostering safety awareness and promoting a safety culture.

The Result

Throughout the maintenance period, the Maeslant Barrier and Hartel Barrier remain safe working environments for everyone involved in maintenance or operational activities.
